UNDERSTANDING INFERTILITY
Infertility Grief Is More Than Medical
Infertility is often experienced as an ongoing cycle of hope, uncertainty, disappointment, and grief. Whether you are navigating IVF, IUI, recurrent treatment failures, unexplained infertility, donor conception decisions, or the emotional impact of reproductive loss, the experience can affect nearly every aspect of your life and relationships.
Unlike many other losses, infertility is frequently invisible. Friends, family members, and even healthcare providers may not fully understand the emotional toll of repeated procedures, waiting, uncertainty, or the grief that follows unsuccessful treatment cycles. Many people find themselves feeling isolated, anxious, ashamed, or disconnected from the future they had imagined.
My approach to infertility therapy is grounded in attachment theory and emotion-focused psychotherapy. Rather than simply teaching coping skills, we work together to understand the deeper emotional experience beneath infertility—the grief, fear, longing, self-doubt, relationship strain, and questions about identity that often accompany the journey toward parenthood.
Washington, DC is home to many nationally recognized fertility practices, including Shady Grove Fertility, Dominion Fertility, Columbia Fertility Associates, and the fertility programs at George Washington University Hospital. While medical treatment focuses on building your family, psychotherapy provides a place to care for your emotional well-being throughout that process. Therapy can complement fertility treatment by helping you navigate difficult decisions, manage uncertainty, strengthen relationships, and process the emotional impact of each stage of your journey.
WHEN LOSS AND INFERTILITY OVERLAP
Pregnancy Loss and Infertility Often Occur Together
Many of the individuals and couples I work with are coping with both infertility and pregnancy loss. A miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, or failed IVF pregnancy can transform infertility into a profoundly traumatic experience. Subsequent fertility treatments may bring renewed hope while simultaneously triggering fear, anxiety, and memories of previous loss.
Because my practice specializes in pregnancy loss as well as reproductive trauma, I understand how these experiences intersect. Therapy offers a place to process grief while also preparing emotionally for whatever comes next, whether that involves continuing fertility treatment, considering other paths to parenthood, or making difficult decisions about the future.
MY APPROACH
Attachment-Based Therapy for Reproductive Trauma
My work is informed by attachment theory, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and emotion-focused therapy. Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, we explore the meaning of your experience, patterns in relationships, and the ways infertility or reproductive trauma has affected your sense of self, safety, and connection with others.
Together we create a space where painful emotions can be understood instead of avoided. Many clients find that this deeper therapeutic approach not only reduces anxiety but also helps them feel more grounded, more connected to themselves and their partners, and better able to navigate the uncertainty that accompanies infertility.
